This is truly a phenomenon of Asia as I don’t have anecdotal experience to back this up. My own opinion is that current camera phones suck in terms of image quality. I guess in Asia (and possibly Europe) because of the population density and lack of cars, people tend to walk around more and don’t like carrying around multiple devices such as a phone and a camera.

LG Announces the KC550 LG is coming out with a new mid-level phone which is being targeted for the European market - the KC550. This new mobile slider packs a whooping 5-megapixel camera at such an affordable price. It features a Scheneider-Kreuznach autofocus lens which is protected by a sliding cover including the flash. The LG KC550 also boasts of a fast processor which is a useful feature when viewing large photos and also for watching DVD videos with high resolution. CEO Steve Jobs announced during his keynote address at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco that developers of third-party applications will be able to create Web applications for the iPhone This gives developers the chance to create iPhone applications using common Web development standards such as Ajax ahead of the device's June 29 launch. As a bonus, those applications will also work on Windows now that Safari will run on Microsoft's operating system.
But this is not what many mobile developers were hoping to hear. Unlike other mobile-phone makers, Apple has chosen not to set up a software development kit or support community for iPhone applications at this time.
Call it the iPhone compromise--Apple is giving developers a chance to get their wares on the iPhone, but not every application will work properly inside a browser without native support. The decision means Apple has a better chance of guaranteeing application security and reliability on the native applications it does allow on the iPhone, but it falls short of what other smart-phone companies--notably Nokia--offer mobile-application developers.using Safari, Apple's Web browser.

Early evidence showing sharp increases in Internet usage on phones, not just computers, has emerged from services Google has begun offering in recent months on Blackberry e-mail phones, Nokia devices for multimedia picture and video creators and business professionals and the Apple iPhone, the world's top Web search company said.
"We have very much hit a watershed moment in terms of mobile Internet usage," Matt Waddell, a product manager for Google Mobile, said in an interview. "We are seeing that mobile Internet use is in fact accelerating.

Windows Mobile Sales Lower Than Expected

Microsoft failed to meet its Windows Mobile sales target for its fiscal year 2008, the company said on Thursday.
By June 30, when the fiscal year ended, Microsoft had managed to sell more than 18 million licenses, less than its 20 million goal.
While the iPhone 3G didn't hit stores until July 11, after Microsoft's fiscal year ended, it could have had an effect on Microsoft. "The iPhone 3G is causing people to hesitate," said Bill Hughes, an analyst at In-Stat. "That doesn't mean those 2 million all went to the iPhone." But some people likely decided to wait and see if the newest version of Apple's phone could be more attractive to them than a Windows Mobile phone, he said.
More so than the iPhone effect, delays with Sony Ericsson's first Windows Mobile phone, the Xperia, likely impacted Microsoft's sales, said Chris Hazelton, an analyst with The 451 Group. While Sony Ericsson has always maintained that the new phone will launch in the second half of the year, Microsoft may have expected the phones to start shipping in the second quarter in preparation for an early third quarter launch, he said. But delays in Xperia's shipment may have meant that Microsoft couldn't tally its sales to Sony Ericsson in fiscal 2008, he said. Microsoft didn't immediately reply to a request for comment about this issue.

Microsoft continues to face tough competition overall from BlackBerry devices. During its fiscal year ending March 1, Research In Motion, the BlackBerry maker, shipped 14 million devices. "Competition in enterprise smartphones is going to be between BlackBerry and Windows Mobile," said Hughes. "Who wins could go either way."
While Microsoft has been in the smartphone market for many years, the mobile-phone operating system market is growing increasingly crowded. In addition to the new iPhone, Microsoft will soon also face competition from rival Google, which plans to release its Android mobile-phone software later this year.
Android phones, like the iPhone, are likely to appeal to the consumer market more so than enterprise users, which has traditionally been Windows Mobile's target. However, that could pose a problem for Microsoft. Hughes recently noticed an increase in the number of companies that don't dictate which phones employees should use, instead allowing them to make their own buying decisions. That shift could be good news for the iPhone, which now allows users to receive Outlook mail on the phones, and potentially for Android phones. Still, Hughes cautioned that in his experience, companies change their policies on phone-buying year to year, and so next year might find more companies dictating which phones employees can use.

HTC's 3G IPhone Rival out in 30 Countries Already

High Tech Computer (HTC), the world's largest maker of smartphones that use Microsoft Windows Mobile, said Thursday its Touch Diamond handset has already been launched by 50 operators in 30 countries around the world.
The company also plans to introduce four or five more Diamond family products in the second half of this year.
The Touch Diamond, popular for its contoured shape, touchscreen and other iPhone-like features, is also a 3G (third generation mobile telecommunications) handset and can store up to 4G bytes of music, photos or other data. It's a follow-up to the HTC Touch smartphone launched last year.

HTC says it has also been successful in working out deals to lower the initial cost of the handset for users. Apple's US$199 price tag on the 3G iPhone put pressure on HTC, which had originally planned to launch the device for NT$23,900 (US$783) in Taiwan.

Symbian OS has a big worldwide lead here, at 58%, with Windows Mobile and RIM tied on 13%. Apple's share is tiny, but then the iPhone's browser doesn't work well with mobile sites (I've tried).

By the end of 2007 there were 295 Million subscribers on 3G networks worldwide, which reflected 9% of the total worldwide subscriber base. About two thirds of these are on the WCDMA standard and one third on the EV-DO standard. The 3G telecoms services generated over 120 Billion dollars of revenues during 2007 and at many markets the majority of new phones activated were 3G phones. In Japan and South Korea the market no longer supplies phones of the second generation. Earlier in the decade there were doubts about whether 3G might happen, and also whether 3G might become a commercial success. By the end of 2007 it had become clear that 3G was a reality and was clearly on the path to become a profitable venture.

Second generation

In the 1990s, 'second generation' (2G) mobile phone systems such as GSM, IS-136 ("TDMA"), iDEN and IS-95 ("CDMA") began to be introduced. The first pre-commercial digital cellular phone call was made in the United States in 1990, in 1991 the first GSM network (Radiolinja) opened in Finland. 2G phone systems were characterized by digital circuit switched transmission and the introduction of advanced and fast phone to network signaling. In general the frequencies used by 2G systems in Europe were higher though with some overlap, for example the 900 MHz frequency range was used for both 1G and 2G systems in Europe and so such 1G systems were rapidly closed down to make space for 2G systems.

Mobile First generation

The first commercial launch of cellular telecoms was launched by NET in Tokyo Japan in 1979. In 1981 the NMT system was launched in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The first handhold mobile phone in the US market was the Motorola Dyna's 8000X, which received approval in 1983. Mobile phones began to proliferate through the 1980s with the introduction of "cellular" phones based on cellular networks with multiple base stations located relatively close to each other, and protocols for the automated "handover" between two cells when a phone moved from one cell to the other. At this time analog transmission was in use in all systems. Mobile phones were somewhat larger than current ones, and at first, all were designed for permanent installation in vehicles (hence the term car phone). Soon, some of these bulky units were converted for use as "transportable" phones the size of a briefcase. Motorola introduced the first truly portable, hand held phone. These systems (NIT, AMPS, SACS, RT MI, C-Net, and Radio com 2000) later became known as first generation (1G) mobile phones.

In December 1947, Douglas H. Ring and W. Rae Young, Bell Labs engineers, proposed hexagonal cells for mobile phones.[1] Philip T. Porter, also of Bell Labs, proposed that the cell towers be at the corners of the hexagons rather than the centers and have directional antennas that would transmit/receive in 3 directions (see picture at right) into 3 adjacent hexagon cells.[2] I [3] The technology did not exist then and the frequencies had not yet been allocated. Cellular technology was undeveloped until the 1960s, when Richard H. Frenkiel and Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs developed the electronics.

The Informa report into the mobile industry shows how the mobile - the device of choice in the majority of people's pockets - is a key way of tasting, or sampling, digital entertainment while on the move.
Content on phones will be increasingly linked in with the wider digital entertainment sphere.
Mobile TV, however, is still an uncertain area for many within the mobile industry.
Although there are trials going on to broadcast TV directly to mobiles, there are rights issues that need to be sorted through. Most operators were looking at mobile TV via their 3G (third generation) video networks for now.
Until the industry found out what people actually wanted to watch on their mobiles though, the "jury was out" when it came to mobile TV as a big businesses, said Informa.
"Mobisodes", mini episodes of 24 which Fox trialled, proved a success, said the analysts, because it was obviously linked to a show they liked watching on TV.

Long life mobile battery

Two-thirds of mobile and personal digital assistant owners in a marketing survey across 15 countries said two days' active battery life was vital.
It also showed almost half wanted more memory, and a high-resolution camera.
The findings come as the electronics industry scrambles to develop the next essential device in people's pockets.
The report by marketing firm TNS Technology said that poor battery life on mobile devices was one of the main reasons people did not play more games, music and video on their devices more often.
"The study shows that there is an appetite among consumers for powerful new applications, particularly those around entertainment media and imaging," said Hanis Harun, from TNS.
"However, the research also indicates that consumers now fully realise that such applications require enhanced battery life and increased memory and they are demanding these improvements as a priority."
Fourteen of the 15 countries in the research agreed that a battery that lasted two days while in active use was essential.
The exception was China; respondents there said that at least 20GB of storage capacity was the top must-have feature.
